For Thanksgiving in 1944 at the Army and Navy General Hospital of Hot Springs, World War II service men and women, doctors, and nurses enjoyed a fine traditional meal along with some more unexpected treats. We can see how this holiday meal compared to past years in the collection of menus spanning more than 20 years included in the archives of Mary D. Hudgins in Special Collections.

Thanksgiving Holiday for Arkansas…145 Years Ago
November 24, 1870, amidst the turmoil of Reconstruction as Arkansas faced political strife and violence from terror groups such as the KKK, Governor Powell Clayton proclaimed a Thanksgiving holiday for every Arkansan. This proclamation held in Special Collections was published just seven years after President Lincoln had created the official federal holiday to be celebrated every November.
