Joel B. Thornton is the University Libraries’ Head of Instruction & Liaison Services. You can find him in MULN 220J. Thornton grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he attended Booker T. Washington High School. He said his work is fun, and “librarianship is the best career in the world!” Who among you doesn’t agree? Thornton’s one short term goal is to get rid of all the moving boxes stored in his garage. Asked to describe himself in three words, he chose: Fun, Considerate, and Approachable. And you’ll never guess what his favorite guilty pleasure is when it comes to candy? Pretzel M&M’s! Now we know how to bribe him. Welcome, Joel!

The celebration of the 95th birthday of architect Fay Jones last Friday also marked the debut of a new rotating exhibit of the architect’s design work. The first selection for this ongoing exhibit comes from the Fay Jones Collection in Special Collections at the Libraries – the circa 1955 drawing by Jones is an early perspective sketch for the Fay and Mary Elizabeth Jones Residence, the home that Jones designed and built for his family in Fayetteville. The FJSA+D’s exhibition team is collaborating with our own Cat Wallack, architectural records archivist, and each piece from the collection will be on view in Vol Walker Hall. Thanks to Lee Holt, Digital Services Technician, for the large format scanning of the sketch – the scanning process is what made it possible to exhibit the archival item. Great work, team!

University Libraries Celebrate Chinese New Year with Book Display
In celebration of the Chinese New Year on Monday, Feb. 8, the Libraries will present a virtual book display of popular, literary Chinese titles. There will also be a physical display showcasing many of the books, which are available to check out, in the main lobby of Mullins. The Chinese publishing industry studies the OCLC’s catalog data to track the most collected Chinese books by overseas libraries. Of the 30 most collected Chinese books by libraries overseas in 2014, 28 are novels. Tim Zou, Head of Performing Arts and Media and Asian Studies subject specialist, has made 24 of these titles available to our users. Sarah Spiegel, reference Librarian, is assisting with the virtual display. Awesome job, team!
6th Episode of Walton Readers Spotlight Now Available for Viewing
Jonathan Torres recently interviewed Dr. Alan Ellstrand, Chair of the Management Department and the Charles C. Fichtner Chair in Management at WCOB, for his popular series, Walton Readers Spotlight. Ellstrand recommended The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail-but Some Don’t by Nate Silver. In the book, Silver examines the world of prediction – predictions fail, Silver says, because most of us have a poor understanding of probability and uncertainty. Find the episode on YouTube to learn more about why Ellstrand chose the title, and watch for a Newswire article tomorrow highlighting the series. Thanks, Jonathan!
