Part of the University Libraries’ Black History Month programming, Special Collections presents the exhibit titled “Lives Transformed: the People of Southland College,” now on view in Mullins Library’s Walton Reading Room. Curated and designed by Special Collections’ exhibit committee (including Amy Allen, Kasey Kelm, Valerie Robertson, Catherine Wallack and Joshua Youngblood), the exhibit features materials from the Southland College Papers (MC 577). The collection documents the history of Southland College, one of the oldest private institutions in the South established for the education of blacks. From the exhibit’s introduction: In the faces of the students and teachers of Southland College we glimpse more than sixty years of African American experiences, aspirations, and triumphs as the United States underwent tremendous transformation from the era of the slavery into the 20th century.

Photo of Elaine Thornton, Distance Education Librarian Elaine Thornton is the University Libraries’ Distance Education Librarian and says of her work, “I always get to learn something new.” You can find her in MULN 223B. Thornton is originally from Oklahoma, but spent the last twenty years in Texas.  She attended the University of Oklahoma, the University of Michigan and the University of North Texas.  I’m willing to bet you have a lot in common with Thornton, who loves Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and is currently reading the final book in the Lunar Chronicles, Winter by Marissa Meyer. But have you ever seen The Lion King on Broadway?! Thornton praises the show as the best live entertainment she’s ever seen and I don’t doubt it. Welcome to the Libraries, Elaine!
