Rock Sets
What’s the second-most circulated item in the Libraries? If you said rocks, you’d be right. Geosciences librarian Jozef Laincz reports that the rocks and minerals kits have recently been expanded from 8 to 16 sets and enjoy a great popularity. With 585 checkouts this semester, they are the most circulated course-reserve item and the second most circulated library item overall after study-room keys. The rock and mineral sets help students of General Geology Laboratory (GEOS 1111L) practice identification of rocks and minerals. Made in-house by the geosciences librarian, the kits save the students the cost of having to purchase individual sets (of inferior quality), save the Arkansas taxpayer’s money because the Libraries didn’t have to purchase them, and ensure a perfect fit with the types of rocks and minerals taught by the course. In the next few months, more sets will be added to fully meet the demand, including new “variety sets” featuring less typical varieties of the rock and mineral specimens for the more ambitious student. In the longer run, the geosciences librarian plans to create interactive digital models of the specimens, a study tool that will be especially useful for long-distance students.
HP DesignJet Z5600
Proud mama Molly Boyd announces the birth, uh, purchase of a new HP DesignJet Z5600 wide format printer. It’s beautiful, but all babies are beautiful. We now have the ability to print up to 44″ wide (42″ wide for glossy paper), which is good news for all of you folks who do conference poster presentations. Come by MULN 224B if you would like to pat The Black Pearl–Molly doesn’t mind.
