Watch Arkansas’s Reel History this Saturday in Little Rock

The University of Arkansas Libraries Special Collections Department will be screening two films from the archives at “Arkansas’s Reel History” this Saturday at the Ron Robinson Theater in Little Rock: Opportunity for Arkansas – Buffalo National River, a fifteen-minute film created by Neil Compton in spring 1963 to promote keeping the Buffalo River free-flowing and undammed;  and an episode of CBS’s The Search, featuring folklorist Mary C. Parler as she scours the Ozarks for folk songs in 1954. Angela Fritz is taking part in the panel discussion following the films, promoting the importance of preserving film and moving images. Find more information on the University’s News page.

CBS film crew of The Search sets up on Oct. 2, 1954 (University Libraries Special Collections, PC2376). The episode this team filmed centered on Mary C. Parler’s search for “the great-great-grandchild” of an Elizabethan ballad, “The Two Sisters.” The Fine Arts Building in the background, designed by famed architect Edward Durell Stone, had just been completed a few years earlier. Find this and other great images from Special Collections, on our flickr photo stream.

1st Annual Staff Appreciation Week is Next Week, 10/12-10/18

Enrollment at U of A is officially a record 26,754, and in Kiplinger’s 25 Best College Values Under $30,000 a Year, U of A ranked #5.  Serving a record number of students this well isn’t easy, but the University Libraries sure make it look that way – and we couldn’t do it without our staff.  The university is rewarding hard working staff across campus with a variety of events and activities next week during Staff Appreciation Week, so be sure to partake in things like: 25% discounts at the bookstore on October 12th and 13th; 20% Discount All Week at Au Bon Pain and Starbucks; and $40 hour long massages at UREC (normally $55).  Find a complete list of events and activities on the University’s News page.

Wage Reports for Department Heads Now Available on Libraries’ Server

Trent Garner reports that wage reports for department heads are now available on our SQL report server.  Using a web browser, go to http://Alexandria/reports and click on the ‘Departmental Reports’ folder to view the wage reports for fy2016.  The older wage reports for fy2015 are available in a subfolder for review.  Feel free to bookmark the link above.  These reports will automatically update as the year progresses, based on the current data in our SQL server. When a report link is clicked on, the report server runs that report immediately, so the most current data is always shown. These reports can be viewed over the VPN from a remote computer, using the browser of your choice.  Internet Explorer and Firefox appear to work the best.  If you are asked for login credentials, please enter GACL\User for the login name, and your password.  You can also use your email address.
