Banned Books Week — an annual celebration of the freedom to read — takes place Sept. 24-30. University Libraries will celebrate with displays and events throughout the week.
A selection of rare banned books will be on display in the Special Collections department of Mullins Library throughout the week, including a recently acquired first printing of Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. Other titles on display will include a first edition of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck; a signed, limited edition volume of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Richard Ellis and Robert Shore; a copyright edition of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley; a signed, limited first edition printing of Vulgarity in Literature: Digressions from a Theme also by Aldous Huxley; a first, limited, private printing of Lady Chatterley’s Lover by Lawton Kennedy, D.H. Lawrence and Wallace Smith; and a rare second printing of James Joyce’s Ulysses collected by John Gould Fletcher. The Special Collections department is located on the first floor of Mullins Library.
A selection of banned books available for checkout will be on display in the lobby level of Mullins Library by the print release station.
User experience librarian Kathleen Lehman will take part in Censorship and Banned Books: A Panel Discussion at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Fayetteville Public Library. Associate professor of law Danielle Weatherby and Fayetteville High School librarian Sarah Roberson will also serve on the panel. The event will be streamed live online.
