Celebrate Black History Month with the Libraries! This year’s theme is African Americans and Labor. Mullins Library has two book displays honoring Black History Month: the Children’s Literature Collection: Black History Month and the Main Collection: Black History Month Display. Please feel free to check out these books!  

Another way the University Libraries celebrate Black history and culture is by acquiring materials in our Special Collections that document the history of Black Americans with ties to Arkansas, such as Florence Price, Daisy Bates, and Geleve Grice.  

Florence Price

Florence Price was the first African American female composer. You can view her photos, original compositions, concert programs and more in our Digital Collections and Special Collections.

Daisy Bates

Daisy Bates was reporter and president of the Arkansas chapter of the NAACP during the Little Rock Nine Crisis.  View her correspondence, photos, newspaper clippings at more in our Digital Collections and Special Collections.

Geleve Grice

Geleve Grice was one of the most prolific Black photographers in Arkansas history.  Public figures featured in his photographs include Muhammad Ali, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Maya Angelou, Wiley Branton, Edith Irby Jones, Ida Rowland Bellegard, Raymond Miller, Lawrence A. Davis, Martin Luther King Jr. and Silas Hunt.
