The Libraries have recently added a subscription to Social Explorer, a collection of easy-to-use tools for visual exploration of demographic information. Social Explorer offers data sets from sources such as

  • U.S. Census
  • American Community Survey
  • United Kingdom Census
  • Canadian Census
  • Eurostat
  • FBI Uniform Crime Reports
  • U.S. election results
  • Religious Congregation Membership Study
  • World Development Indicators

Create and Share Maps

Social Explorer offers powerful and easy-to-use tools to create and customize thematic and interactive maps. Explore all historical and modern US census data across the centuries and even down to street level detail in some cases.  Create side-by-side maps to compare data, save your maps to a personal account, share them them via email, link, or embeds, and export them to your presentation slides.

Reports and Exporting Data

Social Explorer allows users to create data reports at all geographic levels, including state, county, census tract, block group, zip code, and census place (where the data exist).

Reports  can then be exported for professional-looking reports, presentations, and graphics. High-resolution images are available and any presentation can be exported directly to PowerPoint. Export data in convenient formats for use in Excel and other analytic tools such as SAS, R, STATA and GIS. Scripts are included for reading data into popular stat packages.
