Open Access Week and the Latest in Database News

The University of Arkansas Libraries is joining institutions worldwide this week in celebration of International Open Access Week. A great way to get involved is through the Open Access Button, which Beth Juhl, Web Services Librarian, introduces readers to in her latest Database News article. Part useful app that allows you to search for “open access” versions of articles, part advocacy bringing attention to the need for a wider access to the latest research, the button works in all modern browsers. And the Libraries’ programming began today – Lora Lennertz and Luti Salisbury are offering researchers on all levels opportunities to critically engage with Open Access issues. The workshops highlight a wide variety of timely, scholarly communication topics, so visit 365 McIlroy for a full list, or register on the Libraries’ Instruction page.

The Caged Bird Premiers on Campus This Friday

Joshua Youngblood, Research and Outreach Services Librarian, reports The Caged Bird, the latest film by recently-retired music professor, Jim Greeson, will have its on-campus premier at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall this Friday, 10/23, at 7 pm. The film documents the life of Florence Price, a native of Little Rock who became one of the most significant African American composers of classical music. Using documents, manuscripts, and images from the first and second accessions of the Florence Price Papers (MC988 and MC988a) in Special Collections, alongside commentary by Arkansas scholars like Tom Dillard and performances by music faculty here at the U of A, the film promises to make Price’s remarkable story and work better known around the state and the country. The film will premiere on AETN on 11/16 and at the Fayetteville Public Library on 11/17.
