Nomination for National Library Workers’ Day Awards Closes Thursday!
The National Library Workers’ Day is just is around the corner! This year’s celebration and mid-semester State of the Libraries meeting and awards ceremony will be April 17. We are delighted to invite nominations of our co-workers for the 2018 University Libraries Employee Awards, which include recognition and cash prizes. The library awards consist of 5 categories: Rookie of the Year Award, Extra Mile Award, Keystone Award, Outstanding Support Service Award, and Team Project Award. You can find criteria for the awards, the nomination form and the names of past award recipients here. Nominations will be accepted through this Thursday, March 15.

If you have any questions, please talk to any of the members of the Awards Committee: Rose Cody, Marianne Williams, Kelvin Summerville or Sherryl Faulkner-Robinson.

Staff Meeting with Provost
Libraries staff have the opportunity to meet with Provost Jim Coleman this Friday, March 16, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in MULN 104. The Provost is seeking input on the attributes and skill sets necessary for success as the next Dean of Libraries. He would also like our thoughts regarding the future of the Libraries and the composition of a search committee.

Women’s Giving Circle Grants
The University of Arkansas Women’s Giving Circle is accepting grant applications through May 18 for programs and initiatives supporting the campus and communities across the state. Projects should include work that falls within the scope of the Women’s Giving Circle’s funding priority areas:

  • Support and promote scholarship, research and service
  • Enrich the quality of life of women and children
  • Encourage outreach and engagement in Arkansas

To review the process and see a list of past funded recipients, please go to https://womens-giving-circle.uark.edu/womens-giving-circle-grant-application. Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Friday, May 18. Grant semi-finalists will be notified in September and the final grants will be awarded during the fall voting event on Friday, October 19.

Beginning with the 2016 Grant Cycle, the Women’s Giving Circle instituted a two-year funding rule. No applicant may receive funding for the same project for more than two consecutive years. Thereafter, applicants are welcome to submit another project. The maximum funding for any grant will be capped at $20,000. Questions? Contact Kellie Knight at 5-2681 or Karen Stair at 5-2381.

Rockin’ Minerals
Geosciences librarian Jozef Laincz reports having recently completed a second expansion of Mullins’ rock and mineral sets, which now number 24. The sets were also updated with new specimens to reflect the needs of the course they support.

With over 1,500 checkouts for the current academic year alone, the rock and mineral sets are Libraries’ most circulated course reserve item, and the second most circulated item overall, after study room keys.

Made in-house by the geosciences librarian, the rock and mineral sets help students of General Geology Laboratory (GEOS 1111L) practice identification of rocks and minerals while saving their money by giving them an alternative to individually purchased rock kits of lesser quality.

Apart from being popular, the sets also have had a measurable positive impact on students’ grades as indicated by data from the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

The sets may soon have an impact beyond the U of A campus, too. Jozef has been invited to present about them to a gathering of STEM librarians from across the nation at UC Berkley in May.

Way to go, Michelle!
English and Communication Librarian Michelle Gibeault bartered her first-born child to Elsevier Inc. in order to make this article she wrote, Organization of Materials and Accessing the Library in Blackboard: A Learner-centered Usability Study, open access. Check it out!

Brava, Necia!
Raoul Ciappelloni, who is with the library at Instituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale (the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute) in Italy, reached out to agriculture librarian Necia Parker-Gibson to thank her for “the wonderful synthesis of Google Scholar” found in this Research Guide.

Sustainability Tip of the Week
According to the Center for Biological Diversity, Americans use 100 billion plastic bags per year! It takes 12 million barrels of oil to manufacture them. Bringing your own reusable bags to the grocery store can save an average of 1,500 plastic bags per household per year.
