Open Access Group Meeting Feb. 26
All library faculty and staff are welcome to attend the next Open Access Group Meeting on Tuesday, 26 February, at 3 PM in Mullins 486.

Session title: Open Access in (and to) Archives and Special Collections

Join Katrina Windon and Melanie Griffin for a discussion about open access trends in special collections and archives. We’ll be discussing ways that archives at large and the University of Arkansas Special Collections department fulfill the archival imperative of providing open access to the collections we steward.

Research and Publication Basics (ALCTS Five-Part Webinar Series)
Have you wanted to perform research but don’t know where to start? Do you have an idea for research but are unsure about what to do next? Do you want to understand how to perform assessment or how to visualize data to show value to stakeholders? Then this webinar series is for you. This five-part series will introduce attendees to the research and publication process, specifically for those working in technical services areas.

Part 1 provides an overview of the research process and describes each part of a research project. Part 2 describes research methods and data analysis techniques typically used in librarianship. Part 3 discusses how to write the results of research and what editors are looking for in article submissions. Part 4 focuses on assessment in technical services areas and explains how to match assessment goals to methodologies. Part 5 is centered on data visualization and presents the tools and strategies used to communicate value to stakeholders.

All sessions will be held in Room 302B from 1:00-2:00:
Wednesday, February 20, 2019 – Anatomy of a Research Project
Wednesday, March 6, 2019 – Research Methodologies and Data Analysis

Meet Virginia ?
Originally from Ohio, Virginia Siegel has come to Arkansas after working for nearly four years as the Folklife Specialist for the Kentucky Folklife Program at Western Kentucky University. She is the proud pet-mom of two cats, Dave and Louise.

Three Weird Questions

What book are you currently reading?

I’m going back and forth between two books depending on my mood: Pachinko by Min Jin Lee and Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay

If you could close your eyes and be anywhere on earth when they opened, where would you be?

Taipei, Taiwan. I have never been, but I’d so love to visit. A close second choice would be Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

What’s the best live entertainment you’ve ever seen?

A performance by Mongolian morin khuur (horse head fiddle) musicians during a visit to Inner Mongolia Normal University on behalf of the American Folklore Society. The performance moved me to pieces and I frequently watch a recorded video of it when I need a mental break.

The Arkansas Folk and Traditional Arts program will seek to document, present, and conserve the traditional cultural of Arkansas. Traditions can be longstanding, or new and emerging, and I’m excited to shine a light on the diverse heritage of this state!

Stop by MULN 214O to say hi to Virginia! She can also be reached at 5-7115 and vdsiegel@uark.edu.
