Join the Libraries for #GISDAY Festivities TOMORROW at CAST
GIS Day is tomorrow 11-2pm, on the second floor of the J.B. Hunt Transport Services Center for Academic Excellence in the EAST Initiative Suite, JBHT 263, 264 and 265. GIS Day promotes geographic information system technology and its applications. U of A’s GIS Day was planned by Jozef Laincz, Geosciences & Maps Librarian, and Rachel Linck, Geosciences Graduate Assistant, along with help from Terry Winn and others, in partnership with CAST. The program features presentations on topics will like data visualization and geologic mapping. History buffs might enjoy the presentation on the Historic Fayetteville Story Map by Mike Morisette of the city of Fayetteville. Check out the full line-up of events – and learn more about the Augmented Reality Sandbox hashtag competition – on the Newswire (and I’ve also pasted the program below). And check out Beth Juhl’s latest Database News post to find out more about PolicyMap – a database that allows users to see how social data can be revealed through the use of GIS techniques.
Recent Blog Posts Help You Celebrate Native American Heritage Month
Joshua Youngblood’s most recent Special Collections blog post highlights some of our rare holdings related to the Cherokee, like a set of legal volumes that contain the Constitution and Laws of the Cherokee Nation, as adopted in 1892. Beth Juhl’s Database News post “Native American Heritage in Government Documents” links to several significant resources to aid readers in understanding the legacies and contributions of native peoples. And Tim Zou provided a selection of Native American documentaries available to the University of Arkansas community through Kanopy. Visit these posts, and many others, over at 365 McIlroy.

“Snout to Tail” is the final event in “The Homestead Series: Celebrating and Preserving the Culinary History of the Natural State” and it starts at 6pm this Thursday, 11/19, at Tusk and Trotter in Bentonville. Chef Digby Stridiron, culinary ambassador of the Virgin Islands, and Tusk & Trotter’s chef Rob Nelson, will prepare a seven-course tasting menu showcasing their passion for farm-to-table cuisine and utilizing the whole pig. The event benefits Arkansauce: The Journal of Arkansas Foodways. You can purchase tickets online at downtownbentonville.org.
ARGYLE Day at the Libraries is THURSDAY!
Now a tradition at the Libraries, Argyle Day is the closest we come to a uniform around here, and a fun reason to drag out the socks you usually only wear when you golf. The argyle pattern features diamond shapes in contrasting colors, so pick out your fave and meet us for a group photo after lunch on Thursday. More details about time and place will be coming your way soon. Check out a snap of some of last year’s gams here.
