Book Signing with Amy Allen

Stop by the Barnes & Noble in Fayetteville Satuday, Aug. 24, from 12-3 p.m. to have author Amy Allen sign a copy of her book for you! University of Arkansas (Campus History)is a collection of 215 images from Special Collections documenting the U of A’s first 125 years.

Help-a-Hog and Hill Fest

Can you believe it’s nearly back-to-school time?!  Of course, that also means that it is nearly time for Help-a-Hog (August 26 and 27) and Hill Fest (August 26).

If you would like to sign up to help out with either of these volunteer events, please use this link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mHevgFadvrllkCp3LxoUZse4GOQgerd9DQP6N7xY_yo/edit?usp=sharing

For those of you who are new or unfamiliar with these events:

  • Help-a-Hog is a program run by New Student & Family Programs to help lost hogs find their way about campus at the start of the Fall and Spring Semester.  NS&FP sets up tables across campus and recruits volunteers (you!) to help students find their way to their classes.  In the past, in addition to directional questions, we have also answered questions about parking, transit, class schedules, printing, etc.  This is a fairly fun, low-key way to connect with and help out new students.
  • Hill Fest (off-shoot of Razorbash) is an information sharing event for students to learn about organizations and resources (like the Libraries!) that are available to them across campus.  Once the event gets started, it’s rather fast-paced and carnival like.  We have a prize wheel that students can spin for things like multi-color highlighters, thumb drives, and color-changing pencils.  In order to spin, they have to tell us their major/department so we can let them know who their subject librarian is.

Please let Kathleen Lehman (kalehman@uark.edu) know if you have any questions, and many THANKS in advance!

Data Services Webpage
A data services webpage is now available. Look for it under Services or the Library A-Z list. Please also enjoy new guides on data citation and data services throughout our campus.

Lori Birrell gives the following shout outs:

At the end of July the Special Collections Department hosted 40 visiting Fulbright Scholars over two days in partnership with Spring International. Their backgrounds spanned the globe- from Guatemala, to Brazil, Afghanistan, and more. Many thanks to Geoffery, Kara, and Melanie for planning this program and for providing such a meaningful experience for the participants (and thanks Joshua for jumping in and lending a hand). This kind of outreach program is a great way of connecting the Fulbright Program related collections to visitors to our campus.

It truly takes a village to grow our collections. Lori would like to give a special thank you to all who contributed and helped to ensure that famed author, Ellen Gilchrist’s Papers would become part of our holdings. Thank you to Carolyn for championing this collection, and to her and Marco for supporting the acquisition. Thanks to Deena and Deb who coordinated the logistics of getting the collection moved from Gulfport, Mississippi to Mullins. Thanks to Katrina for making the trip to Gulfport with Lori to review the collection and oversee the move. Thanks to Kim for coordinating the delivery of the collection with the movers. And a big thank you to: Isaac, Mikey, Kathleen, Brian, and Melanie for staying until 9:30 last Tuesday night to unload the collection!
