QuickSearch Update Scheduled for Tomorrow (Yep, Already!)
Beth Juhl reports that tomorrow, ProQuest is releasing a user interface update for Summon. ProQuest and Summon are the vendor and technology that power our QuickSearch. Some of the updates we expect to see tomorrow are:

  • The preview pane (detailed view of citations) is moving from the right side to just below citations in the results list
  • Some of the links at the top right will move to a top pop-out menu (sometimes referred to as the “hamburger” icon) so that the desktop version is consistent with the mobile version
  • Facet pane improvements will make it easier to include and exclude, easier to search/filter long facet lists, and will address issues with location of Apply and Cancel
  • A new date picker will include suggested preformatted date ranges as links

Juhl anticipates that some of our custom scripting (example, WorldCat button) could break with this release. Apologies for the short notice, and stay tuned for more information coming soon.

What is QuickSearch Anyway?
New to the Libraries? Our latest resource, QuickSearch, is up and running – and already assisting patrons with finding the information they need. If you are looking for language to help describe what QuickSearch does, or still figuring out the ins and outs of this powerful search engine for yourself, check out Beth Juhl’s answer to the question “What is QuickSearch?” over on our FAQ page. There you’ll learn about Advanced Search, which citation formats are provided, when to use subject-specific databases instead, and more. Then go try it out for yourself at libraries.uark.edu – QuickSearch is the default tab selected on our catalog box when our homepage opens.

Academic Policy 1220.10 Added

The policy provides “a summary of U.S. copyright law as it relates to the activities of faculty, staff and other employees at the University of Arkansas. It also provides some guidelines on the practices of using copyright materials.” All policies may be viewed on the web at Academic Policies.

Interview with Heath Robinson Available at 365 McIlroy
Heath Robinson is the James D. Bales Project Archivist in the Libraries’ Special Collections Department. Robinson is working on the archival processing project, “Seeing Red: James D. Bales and the Southern Red Scare.” Angela Fritz, Interim Head of Special Collections, sat down recently with Robinson to discuss his work on the project. Check out the interview for more info, and highlights from the collection so far (like correspondence with Einstein!).  Awesome post, Heath and Angela! Burn Data or Media to a Disk Using Windows Explorer
Elaine Roser from Libraries IT reports that Windows 7 and 8 offers a free option built into the operating system to burn data/media to a disk. Users can use Windows or File Explorer to burn data to a CD, DVD or Blu-ray disc. Go to Digital Citizen to learn how to use these built-in tools and why they’re better than a third-party service like Roxio – the article comes complete with screen shots. Or, visit Microsoft’s online support for how to burn/rip using Windows Media Player.  Thanks, Elaine!

Back-to-School Reading List Features Staff Picks
August’s book display shows off a diverse selection of titles meant to help new and returning students get in the back-to-school groove. Like always, our staff highlights books that inform, educate, and entertain – sometimes all at once! Check out the full list at 365 McIlroy. One key piece of advice comes from retiring Education Librarian, Elizabeth McKee, who reminds the campus community that “Your ID is your library card. Talk to a librarian.” Sound advice, right? Thanks Elizabeth! And thanks to everyone who turned in a title!
