Lonnie Johnson, Director of Fulbright Austria, To Lecture Tomorrow
The University of Arkansas, the University Libraries, and the Arkansas State Chapter of the Fulbright Association will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Fulbright Program with a lecture titled “Philosophy, Politics, Money, and Memory: The Fulbright Program at Seventy, 1946-2016” by Lonnie R. Johnson, Executive Director of Fulbright Austria on Wednesday, November 2, in the Helen Robson Walton Reading Room of Mullins Library. This talk will take a look at the ups-and-downs in the history of Fulbright Program over seven decades: how it initially was institutionalized and has survived episodes of political conflict, institutional gerrymandering, and budget struggles to date. The reception begins at 4:30 pm; the lecture at 5:00 pm.
Database News: Open Access
Two blog posts celebrated Open Access Week: Mary Leverance, Preservation, Conservation, and Teaching Coordinator for the University Libraries and Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (can I get a nickname or acronym, anyone?) posted “Open Access Geospatial Data” about the creation and volunteering of geographic information through GPS technology, and Beth Juhl posted “Green and Gold and Read All Over: Decoding Open Access” about the common terms used in open access.
Computer Tech Tip
Elaine Roser asks, “Have you ever wanted to create an email message but not deliver it until a later date or time?” Here’s how:
- Open a new email window; create your message (including the recipients and the subject)
- Click on the “options” tab; click on the “Delay Delivery” tab and a properties box will open
- Set the date and time you want the message to be delivered (NOTE: your computer has to be logged in with Outlook open; the computer can be locked but not timed out). Note: you can also designate a different “reply” address (sneaky).
- Click the “close” button, click the “send” button
- The email will be stored in your “outbox” if you need to edit or delete the message before it is sent.
REMINDER: Preview the Arkansas Library Association Annual Conference Tech Services Presentation
You are invited to preview a presentation on “New Tools for Tech Services Workflow: Springshare, Slack, and Beyond” on Friday, November 4 at 2 pm in MULN 104. Presenters are Mary Gilbertson, Cody Hackett, Lisa Lindsey Headstream, Amy McGohan, and Beth Juhl. The group will make this presentation at the Arkansas Library Association Annual Conference and invite comments and suggestions from attendees at the preview.
Shout Out (n.) Informal. A message of congratulation, support, or appreciation.
Melody Herr gives a big thank you to Lora Lennertz for organizing the University Libraries’ Open Access Week celebration, to members of the OA Group who led activities, and to all those who participated. Thank you!
Shout Out 2
A solid shout out goes to all of the well-deserving members of the Staff Concerns Committee for putting so much effort into the Fall Convocation. The decorations were top notch, the prizes were fun, and I even saw Nelson vacuuming. That group knows how to throw a party! Staff Concerns Committee members are Geoffery Stark (chair), Nelson Gonzalves-Shinnick, Cody Hackett, and Charles Sabo.
Please remember to COPY the person or people who are serving as your back-ups in your out-of-office emails to me. It provides not only an excellent last minute confirmation for you, but is also a handy way for me to procure the contact info that I add to each entry. Thank you!
