Welcome, Michele!
Prior to joining the U of A as the Associate Dean of Libraries, Michele Reilly was the Associate Dean of Libraries at Central Washington University in small-town Ellensburg, Washington. Her interests are digital library users and reuses, academic library strategic planning, and fostering teamwork and collaboration.

Three Weird Questions:

What is the first concert you attended?

I’m going to date myself here when I say that my first concert was in the Paramount Theater in Seattle in about 1975. I saw Sly and the Family Stone. It was very exciting, if not a little daring for a small town girl to go to the big city for a concert. Additionally, Sly Stone had a rather bad reputation at that time. If my mother had only known…but we won’t tell her will we. *wink, wink*

If you could close your eyes and be anywhere on Earth when they opened, where would you be?

Hmm…this is a tough one. I’m a bit of an introvert, so my first reaction is at home in my studio with my paints and ukulele, but if my studio happened to be in a lovely little garret apartment on the Croatian Coast, I’d be happy with that, too.

What was your all-time, best-ever Halloween costume?

My youngest son’s birthday is November 1st. When he was about 5 or 6 I had a combined Halloween/birthday party for him. I dressed up as the bride of Frankenstein. Complete with tall black wig with a streak of white running through it, a wedding dress with drops of blood on it, and scars, lots of scars. It was fantastic! The only problem was that it frightened the 5/6 year olds so bad they didn’t want to come in the door when I greeted them. They got over it when they found out it was me. I’ve asked a few of them now that they are adults if it traumatized them for life, but they have assured me that they are okay.

I see my place as providing leadership to the staff engaged in making accessible resources that support the research needs of the university community and supporting the Dean, administration, and faculty and staff of the library.

Stop by Mullins 226D and say hello! Michele can also be reached at 5-2130 or reilly@uark.edu.

Congratulations, Christina!

Reminder: Changes Coming to IRB Protocol Submission
As part of its ongoing efforts to improve the RazorGrant electronic research administration system, the office of the Vice Provost for Research and Economic Development will be rolling out a new, online Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission process in August. The IRB submission process via RazorGrant will open on August 14, and we will no longer accept the Word document protocol submission form as of September 1, 2017.

The vice provost’s office will provide two training opportunities for researchers to familiarize themselves with the new system.

Sierra Upgrade on Tuesday, August 8
The Libraries will be upgrading our catalog system, Sierra, on Tuesday, August 8, from 7 am until approximately 9 am. During that time, the library catalog, Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad), remote access to library electronic resources, Find it!, and Index Arkansas will also be unavailable.

You can refer to our Research Guide, “Down But Not Out,” for tips on locating items in our collection when the library catalog is offline.

Printing Tips for Parking Permits
Faculty/Staff parking permits for FY18 are now available exclusively online, except for ADA permits, which are also available in person. These must be purchased by August 15. After purchasing, you will be prompted to print a temporary pass until your official sticker is mailed to you. Internet Explorer and Safari have proven to be effective to this end; however, FireFox users may need to switch to a different browser for printing purposes.

Working with Faculty to Enhance Visibility & Dissemination of Research
Please join us for this live webinar, sponsored by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, on Wednesday, 9 August, from 10 AM until 11 AM in Mullins 486. Karen Gutzman, Impact and Evaluation Librarian at Galter Health Sciences Library at Northwestern University, “will discuss library services to assist faculty, provide examples of good visibility and dissemination practices, and review traditional and alternative metrics for evaluating research outputs. Attendees will gain insight that will inform and reinvigorate their partnerships with faculty.” Attendance is free, if you would prefer to watch the webinar on your own rather than with the group.
