New Employee Orientation
We will be hosting our annual New Employee Orientation on Wednesday afternoon, August 30 from 3:15 to 5:00 p.m. This year, we will meet in Room 104 for a short presentation and then divide into groups for tours of Mullins Library, so the new employees will be more familiar with the library operations and their locations. After the tours, we will meet in the Staff Lounge at 4:30 p.m. for ice cream and introductions. Please have a department representative available from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the department to greet tour groups as they arrive. We are anticipating at least three different groups.

Please also have the new employees in your areas sign up to attend at http://libraries.uark.edu/humanresources/hrcoursesviewall.asp

Thank you for your cooperation!

Please bring your ideas!

Describing Archives: A Content Standard
The University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, is pleased to host a course offered by the Society of American Archivists, Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) #1813 on Friday, October 6. This workshop focuses on the application of DACS rules and concepts, which participants can integrate into local repository processes and descriptive outputs.  The presenter, (Cory Nimer, MA, MLIS, CA) will discuss how to implement and incorporate DACS into workflows for accessioning, arrangement, and description and provide hands-on work with a variety of exercises designed to help you identify required elements and create a variety of descriptions. Visit SAA’s website for more information and to register for the course. (CEUs include: 5 Archival Recertification Credits; 0.75 General CEU Credits).

As host and co-sponsor, the U of A Libraries will provide morning and afternoon refreshments, as well as lunch.

Computer Tips
Do you need to create a PDF file from Word, Excel, or other Microsoft product? All you have to do is: FILE -> SAVE AS -> drop down the file extension and find “PDF.”

Hint: You should save the file in the format your original document is created in so you can go back and edit that file more easily; then save it again as a PDF and just overwrite the existing file.

Saving a file in a “PDF” format preserves the formatting and does not allow others to alter your document [unless they have Acrobat Pro].

Special Collections Expo
We hope you’ll join us for a Special Collections Expo held in our department from 10-11 on August 16th! Modeled after the elementary school science fair, we’ll have different stations set up with items from the collections.

Be reunited with old favorites in the collections, and find new friends among our more recent acquisitions!

Our Outreach Team will be on hand to talk with you and answer questions.

We hope to see you there!
