Jazz Appreciation Month

Jazz Appreciation Month 2016 poster, featuring Benny CarterApril is Jazz Appreciation Month.  JAM was created by the Smithsonian Institution in 2002 to “herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April.”  For 2016, JAM honors the legacy of musician and composer Benny Carter; visit the Smithsonian website for images, a biography, an oral history, and more selected examples from the Carter papers at the National Museum of American History.

Want some bebop for your laptop?  The Libraries offer a campus wide subscription to Naxos Music Library: Jazz, a streaming service  with more than 32,000 artists on more than 200 labels, including Fantasy, Blue Note, EMI, Sun, and Warner Classics.  Covering jazz in its broadest sense, this service encompasses Delta blues, swing, big band, bossanova, rock and roll, and musical theater.  Naxos Music Library: Jazz includes artists such as Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, and King Oliver from the early days of recording through contemporary performers Norah Jones, Diana Krall, and  Donny McCaslin. There are also unique recordings of college jazz ensembles or international jazz artists from Sweden, Egypt, and Vietnam.  And yes, you’ll find lots of tunes from Benny Carter.
