Jessica Morales has joined the U of A as associate dean for collections and open initiatives for the University Libraries. In this role, she leads the libraries’ efforts in collection development, acquisitions and metadata, and serves as head of the Digital Services, Scholarly Communications, Data Services, Open Education and Preservation units. She began her duties Dec. 1.

“Jessica’s extensive experience, professional engagement and enthusiasm for the work we do will make her a tremendous asset to the University Libraries,” said Jason Battles, dean of libraries. “We are thrilled to have her join our team and look forward to her input and leadership as the libraries continue to grow our collections, digitization efforts and contributions to improving the affordability of instructional and research material.”

Morales has more than 10 years of experience working in academic libraries, having served in a number of leadership roles in collections and technical services throughout her career. Most recently, she served as director of the Collection Strategy and Acquisitions Program for the University Libraries at Notre Dame. She holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of Toledo and a master’s degree in library and information science from Wayne State University.

Originally drawn to the position because of its emphasis on open education, which provides universal access to information through quality open learning materials, Morales’ campus visit cemented her desire to join the U of A community.

“Prior to visiting campus, the University of Arkansas’ mission spoke to my values,” she said. “The emphasis on inclusive environments, creativity and problem-solving all resonated with me. Once I visited campus, the people made me want to come work for the University of Arkansas! Everyone was so welcoming and excited about the work they were doing and the contributions they were making.”

Morales said she looks forward to experiencing more mild winters here in Northwest Arkansas and exploring the area’s many trails with her husband and son. In her free time, she enjoys reading, listening to podcasts and learning new hobbies, including bead embroidery and knitting.

“I am so excited and grateful to step into this role and join the talented faculty and staff at the University of Arkansas,” Morales said. “I look forward to joining the libraries as we reimagine a strategic vision to further advance and support the teaching, learning and research pursuits of our students, faculty and staff.”
