Reminder: Open Access Virtual Presentation
Please join us on Tuesday, 24 April 2018, at 3 PM in Mullins 486 for the virtual presentation ‘Fearless on the Scholarly Communications Front: How the Texas A&M Libraries’ Subject Specialists are Making Impact.’ This presentation will address Texas A&M University Libraries’ initiatives for open access resources for the classroom, creating a library open access policy for the campus, opportunities with data, and translating the faculty narrative.  Several members of the Texas A&M University Libraries’ faculty will share how their roles have expanded and opportunities have arisen from a unique working collaboration with personnel from the Office of Scholarly Communications.

Circulate – Thank You!
Many, many thanks are in order to everyone who assisted with Circulate. It was truly an impressive event. We’ve heard several accolades from attendees who thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learned about the great work we do. Here are a couple of the comments that have rolled in:

“What a great event! I had no idea so much went on in the library.”

“Wonderful event—we learned a lot about the library. Thanks for making these alumni proud!”

Thanks to each and every one of you for all the hard work, the fruit of which the Libraries will be reaping in the months to come.

Special Collections Student Showcase
Join us Thursday, April 26 at 3 p.m. in the Special Collections Reading Room for presentations by Amanda White and Laine McGinty. Amanda will present “Unraveling the American Bible through Book Materiality,” a discussion about book materiality and the rare books in Special Collections. Laine will present her work as an intern in Special Collections, which included processing the personal papers of Thelma Mothershed Wair, one of the Little Rock Nine. She will be discussing the methods for processing, her experience as an intern, and what she would recommend for students seeking similar professional opportunities.

Mental Health First Aid for Library Employees
Julia Paganis, our Education Graduate Assistant and Master’s Counseling student, will be providing an overview of mental health issues from a library perspective.  The presentation will include educative awareness of mental health issues and relevant application, such as de-escalation techniques and available campus resources.  If you are interested in joining the conversation about mental health in the University Libraries, please join in us Room 104 at 2pm on Tuesday, May 1.

Pink Dot Progress Report
As of Monday morning, we have dotted approximately 115,000 items! (Wow.)

If anyone has sheets in their office that need to be pink dotted that you’ve been working through or been intending to work through, please bring them back to Kathleen’s office so they can all be centrally gathered and worked on.

The list for the LRC books has been printed – the heading is in red to catch your attention.  The LRC books are the children and young adult books on Level 3 in the NE corner.  Please alert your students who have been helping to dot to this so they don’t go to the wrong area in the library and encourage them to ask if they’re not sure where to go.

Reminder that has we near the end of all this (and it is getting closer!) you will most likely run into more and more items on your lists that already have dots on them.  Great!  In this case, put a check mark on your sheet and move on to the next one.

Thank you so much to everyone who has been working on this effort!

Preservation Week Webinar
Don’t miss out on our last event for Preservation Week!
Thursday | 4/26 | 1 – 2 p.m. | MULN 486 | Preserving Community Memory

Spring Cleaning Donations
Do you have old photos and negatives, or unused/damaged VHS tapes, CDs, or DVDs taking up shelf space? Donate them to Preservation!

In our upcoming Disaster Response and Recovery workshop, participants will practice rescuing water-damaged materials, but we’re in need of discards for the workshop. Drop off a box (or even just a handful) of any of the above items in the Binding office through Friday, April 27. Note: keep in mind that items will be rendered unusable and will not be returned to you.

Shout Out (n.) Informal. A message of congratulation, support, or appreciation.
Molly Boyd gives a most thankful shout out to all the faculty and staff who made Circulate a success: Stations Managers and assistants—Martha Parker Anderson, Lee Holt, Melody Herr, Cedar Middleton, Monika Szakasits, Randy Thompson, Phil Jones, Amanda Coward Gibson, Luti Salisbury, Stephanie Pierce, Jozef Laincz, Jay McAllister, Necia Parker-Gibson, Tony Stankus, Lora Lennertz, Joshua Youngblood, Katrina Windon, and Cat Wallack; Tech gurus—David Boddie and Trent Garner; and Volunteers—Sherryl Robinson, Terry Wynn, Moultrie Townsend, Marei Houpert, Deena Owens, Will Jones, Mandi Smith, Mary Leverance, Julia Paganis, Abayomi Omolewu, Witness Martin, Lynaire Hartsell, Sara Watson, Rock Capone, Sarah Sarquist, Jeremy Smith, Marianne Williams, Jae Jong, Dylan Hurd, Judy Ganson, and Deb Kulczak. And a double shout out to Marei Houpert and Moultrie Townsend for uncomplaining HEAVY furniture wrangling and poster hanging, to Lora Lennertz for creating the best damn exhibit that was not nearly appreciated enough, to Marianne Williams, Dylan Hurd, and Jae Jong for the fastest break down and room resetting ever when the rest of us were dog tired, to Brian Curtis and Martha Guirl-Phillips for steady, unflagging work until the bitter end, and to Sara Holiday Watson and Terry Wynn for staying past 9 pm on a Friday night to lock the building up after us. The saying goes, “It takes a village,” and I am very grateful that you all are my village.

Kelsey Lovewell Lippard gives a shout out to our amazing graphic designers LeeAnna Thao and Ariel Romero for their hard work on the materials for Circulate. They created original signage for the event andreworked posters, handouts and PowerPoint presentations from units across the Libraries to make them look consistent. They assisted with printing, mounting posters to foam core, and setting up for the event. Notably, they also “borrowed” PCs to rework Microsoft Publisher files, as those are no longer supported on Macs. (Thanks for letting us commandeer your office, Sara Watson!)

Sustainability Tip of the Week
Ink cartridge empty? Don’t throw it away! Take it down to Shipping and Receiving to recycle it. Bonus: it will be easier to find your replacement with the old cartridge right there in your hands!
