Premier Event in Latino Americans: 500 Years of History Series Set for Next Thursday

The Libraries were recently awarded a grant to help support programming to highlight episodes of Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, a documentary from PBS. The first event in the series will feature Professor Juan Jose Bustamante, who will discuss The New Latinos on September 10 at 5:30pm at Fayetteville Public Library. The New Latinos, which is the 4th episode in the series, traces families who left their homes in Latin American countries like Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, in search of a better life. “Receiving segregated educations, struggling to find jobs, and fighting prejudices, many Latino Americans went on to find successful careers in acting, writing, and politics.” The event will also feature bakery from Ayala Family Bakery in Springdale. Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, a public programming initiative produced by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA), is part of the NEH initiative, The Common Good: The Humanities in the Public Square.
