Joshua Youngblood Presenting at RBMS 2016 in Coral Gables, FL
Joshua Youngblood, Outreach and Research Services Librarian in Special Collections, will be presenting a paper at RBMS 2016, the annual conference of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of ACRL, “Treasures in Our Backyard: Bringing Special Collections to K-12 Learning Environments” on Wednesday, 6/22. Youngblood’s presentation shows how resources, “from organizational records and manuscripts, to photographs, fine art, and maps, along with rare or curated secondary material and digital collections,” held in special collections like ours at libraries around the country, have the “potential to open a world of knowledge and information literacy to students.” Go get ‘em, Joshua! And follow Joshua on insta for conference highlights and crocodile hunting pics at jcyoungb.

Database News: Try Out QuickSearch Beta
Beth Juhl’s latest Database News post introduces the community to QuickSearch Beta. As you know, QuickSearch is our Summon service that allows users to search many different library resources at once.  The service indexes millions of articles from scholarly journals and popular periodicals and newspapers, together with books from the library catalog, theses and dissertations, and audio and video files. QuickSearch is still being developed, but the Libraries are hoping early users will provide feedback now – users can click the “Feedback” link at the top of each QuickSearch page to share opinions and suggestions. Thank you, Beth!

Web News: Revision to Catalog’s Permalink Feature
Beth Juhl reports that the design charrette for the Libraries’ catalog was a success and several great ideas are undergoing review. One adjustment stemming from feedback during that meeting that Dylan Hurd has already completed is moving the “permalink” feature over to the right action menu.  Clicking the permalink opens up a copy of the link that users can then copy/paste. Click through to the blog to see a screen shot. Thanks Dylan and Beth!

July is National Anti-Boredom Month – Your Staff Picks Needed!
The Mullins rotating book display for July will feature your suggestions on books that help readers bust out of boredom and enjoy summer. Anything goes! Just send me the permalink (hey, a good time to check out that revision!) to any “anti-boredom” related books available for check-out in Mullins, along with a short description of why you chose the title. The books can be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, academic – anything you want to showcase! I’ll likely add your description to the display.

Shout Out (n.) Informal. A message of congratulation, support, or appreciation.
“This week’s shout out goes to Molly Boyd, Assistant to the Dean, for holding down the Tuesday Times fort while I was away. I know all of you are dying to read the Tuesday Times each week and Molly made sure it included all the news that was fit to print. I really appreciate it!” –Kalli Vimr, PR Coordinator. (This is a semi-regular feature for the Tuesday Times. Let your colleagues know how much you appreciate them by giving them a shout out in next week’s edition.)

  • RazorGrant Renovation: a ton of RazorGrant demo sessions will get you up-to-date on the new interface and features throughout June/July. A full schedule is available on our blog.
  • Innovation Fund: Beginning July 1, resources will help fund innovative, experimental, and collaborative ideas submitted by teams within the Libraries. Program guidelines and submission forms can be accessed online. Initial submissions should be sent to Joel Thornton.
  • Please remember to COPY the person or people who are serving as your back-ups in your out-of-office emails to me. It provides not only an excellent last minute confirmation for you, but is also a handy way for me to procure the contact info that I add to each entry. Thank you!
