Digital Ozark Folksong Collection Turns 1 Next Month
This August the Libraries’ will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the official opening of the digital Ozark Folksong Collection, and today the collection was again featured on Research Frontier’s Facebook wall. During the opening celebration, Brooks Blevins, Noel Boyd Professor of Ozarks Studies at Missouri State University in Springfield, gave an engaging presentation on “Collectors of the Ozarks: Folklore and Regional Image.” Blevins will discuss a new edition of the Arkansas classic Back Yonder: An Ozark Chronicle, at the Fayetteville Public Library, as part of a U of A Press Spotlight series at 6pm on Tuesday, August 9. The event is free and open to the public. Themes from the book, written by Wayman Hogue in 1932, are echoed in many of the folk songs housed in our collection.

3 Weird Questions with Mary LeverancePhoto of Mary Leverance at the Helsinki Library
Mary Leverance recently joined the University Libraries as Preservation, Conservation, and Teaching Coordinator. In her new role, she’s
looking forward to developing an overall preservation program for the Libraries and learning the “ins and outs” of binding. Leverance will also be working with the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies to explore preservation of scientific data, and she will be creating metadata and documentation standards to be used for grant-funded projects.

Leverance has Bachelor of Science in Geography from Arizona State University and a Master’s in Library & Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee. She recently moved to Fayetteville, and previously spent 20 years with commercial real estate company, first as a GIS (Geographic Information System) specialist and then in a research and data management role.

  1. What book are you currently reading? I’m reading two books right now: The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration, by Isabel Wilkerson, and How to Love Wine: A Memoir and Manifesto, by Eric Asimov.
  2. If you could close your eyes and be anywhere on earth when they opened, where would you be? Mexico City – it’s vibrant, full of history and great food, and I’d love to visit Frida Kahlo’s house.
  3. What’s your favorite guilty pleasure when it comes to candy? Dark chocolate, but I refuse to feel guilty about enjoying it!

We hear that, Mary! Welcome aboard! And thanks for taking the time to answer 3 Weird Questions!

Shout Out (n.) Informal. A message of congratulation, support, or appreciation.
“I would like to give a shout out to Charles Sabo in the Serials Department for holding down the fort while I was away. Thank you for your hard work, being a team player, and making sure things were taken care of while I was out. You did a superb job! Thank you so much!” – Ashley Mitchell, Serials Maintenance Specialist. (This is a semi-regular feature for the Tuesday Times. Let your colleagues know how much you appreciate them by giving them a shout out in next week’s edition.)
